Hyundai Kona EV Discontinued In India: Sets Stage For Creta EV Debut

Hyundai Motor India Limited has quietly removed the Kona Electric from its website. This move suggests that the company is gearing up for the launch of Creta EV. The Kona Electric, Hyundai's first electric vehicle in India, never received a facelift in the Indian market. It had a claimed range of 452 km on a single charge.

The Kona Electric's sales were slow due to its ageing interior design and crossover body style, which is less popular compared to SUVs. Hyundai has confirmed that their first mass-market electric vehicle will be launched in January 2025. This vehicle will be an electrified version of the Creta and will be manufactured at Hyundai's Tamil Nadu facility near Chennai.

Hyundai Kona EV Replaced by Creta EV

Details about the specifications of the Creta EV are currently unavailable. However, it is expected to offer a claimed range between 400 km and 500 km. This range is comparable to Maruti Suzuki's upcoming eVX electric SUV, which is anticipated to have a range of 550 km.

A significant difference between the Creta EV and eVX might be their platforms. The eVX will use a dedicated electric skateboard platform, providing ample cabin space due to the wheels being positioned at the corners and the floorboard being composed of the battery pack. It is still uncertain whether the Creta EV will adopt a new electric skateboard platform or modify the existing Creta platform for an electric drivetrain.

Pricing and Competition

The price of the Creta EV has not been disclosed yet. However, it is expected to be priced between ₹20 lakh and ₹30 lakh. The Creta EV will compete with other electric SUVs such as MG ZS EV, Tata Curvv, Maruti Suzuki eVX, BYD Atto 3, and Mahindra XUV400.

Launching the Creta EV first makes sense for Hyundai because the internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the Creta is one of the most popular SUVs in India and has been performing well in terms of sales.

As Hyundai prepares for this significant launch, it marks a pivotal moment in their journey towards expanding their electric vehicle lineup in India. The introduction of the Creta EV could potentially reshape Hyundai's position in the Indian electric vehicle market.
