Hagerty Foundation And New York Schools Launch Driver's Ed Funding Initiative
The Hagerty Drivers Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to preserving automotive culture, has partnered with New York City public schools and the New Visions non-profit. This collaboration aims to fund driver's education training for students, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The initiative will help students obtain a driver’s license, which is crucial for many entry-level jobs.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drivers aged 16 to 19 face significant risks of motor vehicle crashes. Quality driver training can mitigate these risks but often comes at a high cost, ranging from $200 to $1,000 in many states. The Hagerty Drivers Foundation's grant will cover these expenses for students, removing financial barriers.

The "Auto-Pilot" program by New Visions prepares students for the workforce by supporting them in obtaining a driver’s license. This program is especially beneficial for those aiming for civil service and union jobs that require driving skills. Jennie-Soler-McIntosh, Vice President of Community Engagement at New Visions, said, "The Hagerty Drivers Foundation will be our inaugural partner in launching this important program."
Casey Maxon, Senior Manager of Heritage at Hagerty Drivers Foundation, highlighted the significance of this initiative: "The automobile has made an indelible mark on our society for well over a century." He added that the foundation's "License to the Future" program has become a gateway for young adults to express their freedom and access employment opportunities.
Since its inception in 2021, the "License to the Future" program has provided grants to over seven hundred students nationwide. These grants help cover the costs of driver’s training courses, making it easier for young people to obtain their licenses and pursue job opportunities.
New Visions' Commitment
For over three decades, New Visions has been committed to improving the quality of New York City public schools. They focus on providing educators with tools and resources to build strong systems that support student success. Their investments include student planning tools and innovative career preparatory programs.
In New York State, drivers aged 16 to 24 make up only 12% of licensed drivers. This percentage is likely even lower in New York City due to its extensive public transportation system. The partnership with Hagerty aims to address this gap by providing essential support for young drivers.
