Goodwood Revival Ends 2024 Motorsport Season With Historic Sustainable Races
After an outstanding weekend of classic racing and memorable celebrations, the Goodwood Revival has brought the phenomenal 2024 motorsport event season to a close. The event was marked by its commitment to sustainability, with all races using fuel containing at least 70% advanced sustainable components. This milestone makes it the first historic motorsport event to run entirely on sustainable fuel.
Legendary drivers and riders graced the event, including former Formula 1 drivers, BTCC and NASCAR Series champions, and Le Mans and Isle of Man TT winners. Notable participants included John McGuinness MBE, Tom Kristensen, Jimmie Johnson, Dario Franchitti, Sir Jackie Stewart, Jacques Villeneuve, David Brabham, Derek Bell, Jochen Mass, Karun Chandhok, Max Chilton, and Jean-Éric Vergne.
The Goodwood Revival also celebrated several significant anniversaries. A parade of pre-1966 beach buggies marked 60 years of the Meyers Manx dune buggy. The Duke of Richmond and Lord March joined the parade despite rainy weather. Additionally, a tribute to John Surtees commemorated his illustrious career with a display of cars and bikes from various disciplines he competed in.
Another highlight was marking 80 years since D-Day with over 100 military vehicles on display. The largest ever gathering of military vehicles at Goodwood featured Supermarine Spitfires and Amphibious crafts. The parade included Field Marshal Montgomery’s Rolls-Royce Wraith Staff Car carrying D-Day veterans John Dennett and George Chandler.
The weekend saw thrilling races despite unpredictable weather conditions. Michael Russell and Michael Rutter won the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy on a Norton Velocette MSS. Dario Franchitti and Jimmie Johnson clinched victory in the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy driving an Aston Martin DB4GT. Jake Hill and Tom Ingram battled for the RAC TT Celebration title.
Younger drivers participated in the Settrington Cup with Josh Johnston emerging victorious. Luca Franchitti and Hugo Upward followed closely behind him. These races showcased both seasoned professionals and upcoming talents in motorsport.
Revive & Thrive Village
The Revive & Thrive Village continued its mission to promote sustainability through talks, workshops, and demonstrations. Glamour evangelist Dita Von Teese led a line-up of speakers that included David Gandy, Paula Sutton, Patrick Grant, Annie Phillips, Ruth Gemmel among others. The village moved to Revival High Street this year with DJs providing classic beats with a modern twist.
Dominic Chinea and Micaela Sharp hosted sewing, mending, and embroidery workshops alongside large-scale restoration projects for classic cars and bikes. This initiative highlighted heritage craft skills while promoting creative ways to rethink iconic designs.
Aviation Highlights
The Freddie March Spirit of Aviation presented by Bonhams|Cars showcased rare aviation machines like Supermarine Spitfires from World War II. The 1939 Westland Lysander G-CCOM won ‘Best in Show,’ followed by the 1941 de Havilland DH82a Tiger Moth G-ASPV in second place. Judges included Katherine Moloney from Transair Flight Equipment and Guinness World Record holder Mack Rutherford.
Auction Highlights
The Bonhams|Cars Auction featured unique vehicles such as a 1998 Porsche 911 Type 993 Turbo Coupé which sold for £614,200. Other highlights included a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Corto Spider Recreation fetching £552,000 and a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Touring Coupé selling for £471,500.
Unmissable Moments
This year’s main entrance transformed into Wild Westhampnett celebrating the anniversary of British television’s first western show. Visitors enjoyed an immersive experience reminiscent of a western film set. The Betty Richmond Driving School celebrated state-of-the-art simulators’ revolutionising driving education since their inception in the 1950s.
Famous faces spotted at the event included Hugh Bonneville, America Ferrera, Joseph Fiennes, Hero Fiennes Tiffin among others adding glamour to this historic celebration.
Tyrrell Shed Opening
The historic Tyrrell Shed officially opened its doors to visitors on Sunday morning during the Revival weekend after being previewed at the Members’ Meeting earlier this year. Martin Brundle joined Sir Jackie Stewart along with The Duke of Richmond for this special occasion showcasing Ken Tyrrell’s championship-winning Formula 1 team’s creations like Tyrrell 001 & Tyrrell 006 fitted out reflecting their period use.
Event Charity Support
This year’s Goodwood Revival supported St Wilfrid’s Hospice providing palliative care across West Sussex & Hampshire regions through volunteer efforts sharing details about their work alongside showcasing vintage fashion pieces available year-round at their Chichester shop.
The next Goodwood Revival is scheduled from Friday 12 - Sunday 14 September 2025 with tickets available starting Monday November fourth while members get priority booking late October ensuring another exciting season ahead filled with historic racing events continuing tradition seamlessly blending past present future together under one roof once again making it unmissable experience every motorsport enthusiast looks forward eagerly each year without fail!
