Immediate Retrofitting Of LCVs Essential To Combat Emissions, Say Electrification Experts

Research by McKinsey & Company reveals that light commercial vehicles (LCVs) are responsible for 40% of logistics-related emissions, which is significantly higher than the 5% from air freight. BEDEO, experts in fleet electrification, urge immediate action on electric retrofitting to reduce these emissions rather than waiting until 2035 or later. They stress the urgent need for government intervention to address the environmental impact of LCVs.

BEDEO's Reborn Electric programme offers hybrid and full electric retrofit conversions for large vans, aiming to cut emissions with minimal disruption. Their whitepaper, ‘Accelerating the Transition, Supporting our Businesses: Enabling Low-Emission Fleets with Retrofit Electrification,’ highlights the necessity of retrofitting incentives to speed up fleet electrification.

With diesel LCV sales increasing and slow progress in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, BEDEO emphasises that retrofitting is essential for meeting the UK's net-zero goals now. They argue that waiting until 2035 is not viable. The McKinsey report underscores the need for stronger actions from fleet owners, OEMs, and policymakers to reduce LCV-related tailpipe emissions.

Osman Boyner, Founder and CEO of BEDEO, stated: "No longer can we hide from the facts – LCVs are the single biggest polluters in the logistics industry. Our reliance on them isn’t going to reduce, and for good reason – LCVs are the backbone of the logistics industry – however, we need to rethink the way we power them [mainly with fossil fuels] and offer cost-effective electric versions now, and not just wait until they’re banned – that could be in 2030, 2035 or even beyond that."

High upfront costs and limited availability hinder new eLCV purchases. BEDEO’s 'third way'—retrofitting an electric powertrain through its Reborn Electric programme—offers a cost-effective alternative. This method preserves load space while reducing CO2 emissions from LCVs. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) data shows a decline in battery electric LCV registrations this year compared to last year.

The UK van industry is at a critical juncture. Without swift action and innovative solutions like BEDEO's in-wheel motor technology, achieving net-zero goals may be challenging. Osman Boyner continues: "We urge the Government to recognise and support these alternative electrification pathways, which not only make economic sense – for both the country and fleet managers everywhere – but are crucial for achieving our environmental commitments."

Government Support Needed

BEDEO calls on the government to support retrofitting as part of a low-emission transition strategy. This approach offers a faster and more cost-effective solution compared to buying new diesel vans. Retrofitting ensures lower total cost of ownership (TCO) while maintaining operational continuity with minimal downtime.

The McKinsey report highlights that LCVs contribute significantly to logistics sector pollution. BEDEO advocates for rapid adoption of electric retrofitting to mitigate this impact immediately rather than waiting years. Their whitepaper stresses introducing incentives for retrofitting and tighter regulations on safety and quality standards.

Industry Impact

BEDEO’s innovative retrofit solution aims to decarbonise city centres by converting existing diesel vans into electric or range-extended vehicles using IWM technology. This approach addresses range anxiety issues while promoting low-emission solutions. The company has submitted evidence supporting government reviews on policies related to DVLA registrations for vehicle conversions.

Their transformative approach has made BEDEO a preferred partner for over forty blue-chip customers across various sectors including logistics, e-commerce, food retail, and urban waste management. Their commitment extends beyond road transport into marine and aviation markets as well.

The urgency of adopting retrofit solutions cannot be overstated. By embracing these technologies, the UK can significantly reduce diesel van emissions, improve air quality, and accelerate progress towards sustainability goals.
