UK Commercial Vehicle Production Reaches 14-Year High Despite August Output Decline

British commercial vehicle production experienced a 10% decline in August, following an increase in July. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 6,044 units were produced in UK factories. Despite this drop, year-to-date figures remain 8.8% higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019, largely due to the traditional summer shutdown affecting August output.

Exports continued to play a significant role, with only a slight decrease of 0.2%, equating to seven fewer vehicles compared to last year. Over half of the production, specifically 59.3%, was destined for international markets, with the European Union receiving the majority at 97.2%. Meanwhile, domestic production saw a substantial decline of 21.3%, resulting in just 2,457 units.

The UK automotive industry is crucial to the economy, contributing £93 billion in turnover and £22 billion in value added annually. It invests approximately £4 billion each year into research and development. The sector employs around 198,000 people directly in manufacturing and supports an additional 813,000 jobs across related industries.

In terms of trade, the automotive sector accounts for 12% of all UK goods exports. Vehicles manufactured in the UK are traded globally, generating £115 billion from total automotive imports and exports. The industry produces a wide range of vehicles including cars, vans, taxis, trucks, buses, coaches, and specialist vehicles.

From January to August this year, UK commercial vehicle plants produced 78,805 units. This marks a 5.8% increase compared to the same period last year and represents the best performance since 2010 despite ongoing supply chain challenges. Compared to 2019 levels, production has surged by an impressive 72.3%, driven primarily by exports which rose by 12% with 52,389 units shipped abroad.

Domestic market output decreased by 4.7%, totalling 26,416 units during this period. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive stated that demand for British-built commercial vehicles remains robust despite August's decline aligning with expectations as manufacturers adapt to new models and market demands.

Sustaining Future Success

Hawes emphasised that maintaining future success relies on ensuring the UK's competitiveness both domestically and internationally for zero-emission vans, trucks, buses and taxis produced by local plants: "Demand for British-built commercial vehicles remains strong and while August output was down... Sustaining future success depends on ensuring the UK retains its competitiveness."

The automotive industry also supports other key sectors such as advertising, chemicals finance logistics steel through its vibrant aftermarket remanufacturing industries supported by over component providers skilled engineers across country offering wages higher than average outside London South-East regions.

The SMMT periodically revises data if new information becomes available ensuring accuracy transparency within industry stakeholders public alike providing insights into trends developments shaping future landscape automotive manufacturing sector UK beyond.
