The Festival of the Unexceptional is unique in celebrating cars that were once everyday sights but are now almost forgotten. These vehicles are kept alive by dedicated enthusiasts who work hard to preserve them long after their manufacturers have ceased production. The event features a Concours de l’Ordinaire, showcasing some of the UK’s rarest ordinary cars.

Among the brands to look out for at this year’s festival are Austin, Daihatsu, Datsun, Daewoo, Lancia, Morris, Mitsubishi, Rover, Triumph, and Yugo. Each brand has a rich history and has produced models that were once ubiquitous but are now rare finds.

Austin was founded by Herbert Austin in 1905 and ceased production in 1988. The Austin Metro is likely to be seen at the festival. Daihatsu started making engines in 1907 and left Europe in 2013; expect to see a Daihatsu Charade. Datsun began in 1911 and was phased out in favour of Nissan by the early 1980s; a Datsun Cherry might make an appearance.

Daewoo entered the UK market in 1995 but went bust in 2002; look out for a Daewoo Espero. Lancia stopped selling cars in the UK in 1993 but may return with electric models; a Lancia Beta could be spotted. Morris disappeared when the last Ital was produced in 1984; a Morris Marina might be present.

More Rare Finds

Mitsubishi's automotive arm started in 1970 and closed its UK operations in 2021; a Mitsubishi Colt is expected at the festival. Rover built cars from 1904 until production ended in 2005; look for a Rover 200 Series (SD3 model). Triumph acquired Dawson Car Company in 1921 and was bought by Leyland in 1960; a Triumph Acclaim might be seen.

Yugo began as a reworked Fiat model in 1980 and stopped exporting to the UK during the Yugoslav wars; expect to see a Yugo 45 at the event. These brands represent a bygone era of motoring history that enthusiasts continue to cherish.

A Full Day of Activities

The festival will feature an earlier opening time this year, with gates opening at 7:30 am. The first 50 arrivals will receive a special Festival Birthday surprise. Attendees can enjoy various activities throughout the day, making it an event not to be missed for car enthusiasts.

The entry price is £35 per car, which means if you can pack multiple people into one vehicle, it becomes an affordable day out at just £7 per person for those travelling together. Enthusiasts are encouraged to grab their tickets soon as they are selling fast.

Hagerty operates several other events besides this festival, including RADwood UK and Hagerty Hillclimb. The company aims to preserve driving culture for future generations through various programs and events tailored for automotive enthusiasts worldwide.

This year's Festival of the Unexceptional promises to be memorable with its diverse range of activities and rare car displays. It offers an opportunity to celebrate automotive history uniquely while enjoying a fun-filled day at Grimsthorpe Castle.
