UK Staycations Transformed: Electric Vehicle Charging Points Boost Accessibility

Data from Zapmap and BMW UK reveals that numerous electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are now available along popular British holiday routes, simplifying travel to favourite destinations. BMW has collaborated with UK National Parks to install new EV charge points in all 15 of the UK's National Parks, aiming to reduce emissions and noise pollution.

The UK's charging infrastructure saw a 45% increase this year, with over 64,000 charging points across more than 33,000 locations. As families prepare for summer holidays in places like the Yorkshire Dales, Peak District, and Lake District, data from Zapmap and BMW UK indicates that travelling by EV is now more convenient than ever.

EV Charging Enhances UK Staycations

Last year alone, over 16,600 EV charge points were added across the UK, marking a 45% year-on-year increase. Currently, there are more than 64,000 charge points available at over 33,000 locations. EVs produce no driving emissions and less noise pollution, making them ideal for preserving the tranquillity of countryside retreats.

BMW's partnership with UK National Parks has led to the installation of 135 new EV charge points across all 15 National Parks. So far, 78 new charge points have been installed in seven National Parks. Graham Biggs, Corporate Communications Director at BMW UK, stated: "While the ever-growing number of EV charge points in the UK is encouraging, it’s vital that the momentum is accelerated and that rural areas are not left behind in the EV transition."

The UK's National Parks attract around 15 million visitors during July and August. These parks include stunning locations like the Lake District's waters, the Peak District's rolling hills and farmland, and Yorkshire Dales' spectacular waterfalls. Sustainable enjoyment of these parks is crucial as they play a significant role in national health and wellbeing.

Currently, 93% of visitors to National Parks travel by car. While more public transport is needed, Zapmap data shows that popular routes to these parks are now well-equipped with enroute EV charge points. This development benefits both tourists and locals who can now travel in quieter vehicles with zero emissions.

Enhanced Charging Network

For instance, between London and Yorkshire Dales National Park (261 miles), there are 91 charging locations within two miles of main roads. From Glasgow to Peak District (277 miles), there are 144 locations; while between Bristol and Lake District National Park (241 miles), there are over 180.

Melanie Shufflebotham, Co-founder and COO of Zapmap commented: "It is great to see these new charging facilities being installed as part of The Recharge in Nature Project." She added that these destination chargers would be ideal for EV drivers to recharge while exploring National Parks.

BMW's Commitment to Sustainability

The Recharge in Nature partnership between BMW and UK National Parks has led to newly installed chargers in Yorkshire Dales National Park, Peak District National Park, and Lake District National Park. This initiative reflects BMW UK's commitment to sustainability.

The BMW Group aims to halve average CO2 emissions per vehicle by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. The company was among the first automotive brands to join the Business Ambition for 1.5°C under the Paris Climate Agreement. By doing so, it also participates in the Race to Zero campaign.

The success of BMW Group relies on long-term thinking and responsible actions. The company prioritises sustainability and efficient resource management throughout its supply chain and production processes. Enhancing the EV recharging network exemplifies this approach.

National Parks Overview

The UK boasts 15 National Parks: ten in England, three in Wales, and two in Scotland. These parks cover nearly 10% of England's land area, 20% of Wales', and 8% of Scotland's. Each park is managed by its own authority but does not own all land within its boundaries.

National Park Authorities aim to conserve natural beauty while promoting public enjoyment of these areas' special qualities. They also seek to foster local communities' economic and social well-being within the parks.

Zapmap's Role

Zapmap was founded in 2014 with a mission to simplify the EV charging experience wherever you go. The app helps drivers search for charging stations, plan routes, and pay for charging services. It currently has over 850,000 registered users.

Zapmap has mapped over 95% of public charging points in the UK network; more than 75% show live status data around-the-clock. Zapmap Insights provides valuable data analysis on EV charging infrastructure usage patterns and driver behaviours.

This summer offers an excellent opportunity for families planning British holidays at beauty spots like Yorkshire Dales or Lake District using electric vehicles (EVs). With improved infrastructure supporting sustainable tourism through reduced emissions and noise pollution from quieter cars – nature remains protected yet accessible for everyone!
