Aston Martin Receives £6 Million UK Government Funding For Sustainable Aluminium Development
Aston Martin has received a £6 million grant from the UK Government to enhance its sustainability efforts. This funding, provided through the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC), will support Project PIVOT. The initiative aims to develop lightweight, sustainable aluminium castings for future Aston Martin vehicles. Led by Sarginsons, an aluminium supplier based in Coventry, this project seeks to transform the global casting industry by using 100% recycled aluminium.
The funding aligns with Aston Martin's 'Racing. Green.' strategy, which focuses on reducing the environmental impact of its supply chain. In August, Aston Martin joined Drive Sustainability, a coalition of 16 automotive manufacturers working to improve social, ethical, and environmental performance in supply chains. This collaboration is facilitated by CSR Europe and underscores Aston Martin's commitment to sustainability.
Roberto Fedeli, Group Chief Technology Officer at Aston Martin, expressed gratitude for the APC's support. "The award of funding from the APC is a major boost to Project PIVOT," he stated. The project aims to use advanced metal solidification and digital-twin simulations to create low-carbon alloys with higher recycled content in Aston Martin models.
Ian Constance, Chief Executive of APC, highlighted the importance of such collaborative projects in advancing the UK's automotive production excellence. He noted that these initiatives demonstrate the sector's vital role in achieving net-zero goals and present significant investment opportunities. The focus ranges from sustainable materials to advanced electronics and smart software systems.
Aston Martin is also exploring alternatives to traditional internal combustion engines as part of its blended powertrain strategy. This approach includes developing plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The Valhalla model is set for full production later this year, with deliveries expected in 2025.
Aston Martin's Legacy and Future Vision
Founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, Aston Martin has become synonymous with style, luxury, performance, and exclusivity. The brand combines cutting-edge technology with traditional craftsmanship to produce acclaimed luxury models like the Vantage, DB12, Vanquish, DBX, and Valkyrie hypercar.
Aston Martin Lagonda designs and exports cars sold in over 50 countries worldwide from its Gaydon base in England. Its sports cars are manufactured there while its luxury DBX SUV range is produced in St Athan, Wales. The company aims for net-zero manufacturing facilities by 2030.
In 2020, Lawrence Stroll became Executive Chairman following significant new investment. This marked a new era for Aston Martin as it returned to motorsport's pinnacle with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange as Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings plc.
The recent government funding represents a significant step forward for Aston Martin's sustainability initiatives. By focusing on innovative materials and technologies, the company aims to reduce its carbon footprint while maintaining its reputation for luxury and performance excellence.
