Volkswagen Will Not Sell Petrol And Diesel Cars In Norway From 2024
Volkswagen announced earlier this week that it would terminate the sale of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in Norway by the end of 2023 and will solely retail electric vehicles from 2024.
This development was unveiled via a press release by Moller Mobility Group, Volkswagen's importer in Norway, amidst the celebration of the brand's 75th anniversary in the country on October 21.

Beginning Of A New Phase
The last Volkswagen Golf with an Inner Combustion Engine will be sold in Norway at the end of 2023, marking a pivotal transition in vehicle sales. Since 1948, Volkswagen has managed to sell 1.1 million vehicles in the country, hosting EVs' contributions of approximately 102,000 units.
The first Volkswagen electric vehicle was launched in Norway on October 21, 2023- a date deemed special for the German auto brand and its local importer.

Driving Change and Innovation
The Managing Director at Volkswagen importer Harald A. M ller AS, Ulf Tore Hekneby, elucidated the decision as a significant 'drive to change', marking a departure from iconic model icons for a truly environment-friendly automotive future.
The new investment direction might seem ambitious, but Hekneby affirmed that it is a crucial forward push to establish a profound evolution in the auto industry. The company is now urging customers to explore Volkswagen's new ID range of EVs, while the ID.7 electric sedan, deemed as a replacement for the Passat, will soon be introduced.

Norwegian Electric Car Market
Norway has markedly been a world leader in the EV adoption movement, having established a robust charging infrastructure. About 80% of the total car sales today in the country are EVs, with brands like Tesla dominating the industry.
Norway has decided to ban the sale of new ICE cars from 2025, transitioning completely to EV retail. The country is a global pioneer in the adoption of environment-friendly auto retail, with EVs such as Tesla's Model Y and Volkswagen's ID.4 leading the charge.
Volkswagen's Growing Global EV Market
Volkswagen's EV range is garnering increased adoption with reported electric vehicle deliveries rising by 45 per cent as of September 2023. Between January-September 2023, the company sold 531,500 EVs globally, marking Europe as the brand's biggest market.
On the other hand, the US and China closely follow Europe in terms of EV sales. The VW ID.4 and ID.5 hold the title of the brand's bestselling models, followed by the ID.3.
As Volkswagen leads the way in shifting from ICE cars to electric vehicles in the Norwegian car market, it symbolises the changing landscape of the global auto industry. The ecological imperative to shift towards more sustainable modes of transportation is growing stronger each day and is being clearly embraced by leading manufacturers like Volkswagen.
Their successful transformation to EV retail in Norway could pave the way for similar changes worldwide, pushing the growth of electric vehicles and bringing us a step closer to a more sustainable future.
