New RDE Norms To Go Live From 1st April – All You Need To Know

The Indian automobile sector is taking yet another giant leap from 1st April 2023 after the implementation of new Real Driving Emissions (RDE) norms in the country.

Starting with the basics, the upcoming new RDE norms are a lot more stringent and automotive companies are already spending a lot of money to make their current cars compatible with these latest emission norms.

That being said, some companies are trying to save big money by understanding the feasibility of each model and axing models that are not profitable for the company under the new RDE emission norms. As a result, many car makers have already stopped the production of some of the models and variants.

Moreover, it is also worth mentioning that diesel powertrain units are more difficult to upgrade to the upcoming RDE norms. This means, more diesel cars in India are likely to be axed by respective car manufacturers before the introduction of the RDE norms in the country.

Speaking about RDE norms, these latest test norms require emission testing that is representative of the real-world usage of automobiles. This makes it a lot more challenging for car manufacturers as the end emission is affected by various parameters such as road conditions, altitude, ambient temperature, and many more.

It is also worth mentioning that these RDE norms are supplemented by the Modified Indian Test Cycle (MIDC). However, thanks to the implementation of these new RDE norms in the country, automotive manufacturers are now bringing in more electrified propulsion technologies to overcome the new emission regulations. Furthermore, this has also pushed some automobile manufacturers to kill their diesel engines as well.

However, it is not only the diesel cars that are likely to get axed before the implementation of new RDE norms in India. In fact, some petrol-powered cars are also likely to get axed by car manufacturers to stop incurring losses post the upgrade to RDE norms. These vehicles include the likes of the Mahindra KUV100, Nissan Kicks, Renault Kwid, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, and a few more.

Thoughts About The RDE Norms In India

The upcoming new RDE norms in India will be implemented from 1st April 2023 onwards and we expect a sharp drop in the resale value of old diesel cars in the country. However, on the bright side, the new RDE norms will force car manufacturers to develop electrified propulsion technologies to overcome the new emission regulations. As a result, overall emissions from automobiles can be reduced by a decent margin.
