Mercedes CLE Coupe Debuts - All-New Nameplate Replaces Two Cars
German carmaker Mercedes has revealed the all-new CLE coupe and cabriolet. The coupe will go on sale in November in its home market, while the cabriolet will hit the roads in 2024.
The CLE will end up replacing the C-Class & E-Class coupe and cabriolet. The new CLE shares components with both the new C and E-Class but is longer than the outgoing E-Class coupe.

The new Mercedes CLE sits on the MRA platform that also underpins the new C-Class, E-Class and S-Class. The new CLE coupe is 4,850mm long, 1,860mm wide and 1,428mm high and sports a 2,865mm long wheelbase.
When it arrives in November, the new CLE coupe will be offered with one diesel and four petrol powerplant options, all of which benefit from Merc's second-generation integrated starter generator (ISG) setup.

All five powerplants are turbocharged 2.0-litre, inline four-cylinder units and feature the same ISG mild-hybrid setup with the gearbox-mounted electric motor adding 23bhp and 200Nm of torque for shorts periods of heavy right foot hoofing.
The diesel, which will sport the CLE 220 d nameplate, pushes out 197bhp and 440Nm of torque from its oil burner. This results in a 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 238km/h.

The base petrol model dubbed the CLE 200, offers up 204bhp and 320Nm of torque and hits 100km/h from a standstill in 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 240km/h.
The CLE 200 is also offered with four-wheel-drive, which pushes the 0-100km/h time down to 7.5 seconds. The top speed also drops by 4km/h to 236km/h.

The CLE 300 4Matic is the next step up in the petrol range. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine pushes out 258bhp and 400Nm of peak torque. 0-100km/h is dealt with in 6.2 seconds, and the top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.
The CLE 450 4Matic is currently the most unhinged version of the new coupe to be revealed till now. The CLE 450's engine pushes out 381bhp and 500Nm of torque. The CLE 450 sprints from 0-100km in 4.4 seconds and is also limited to 250km/h.

All versions of the new CLE coupe sport a 9-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The CLE 220 d and CLE 220 are rear-wheel drive cars, while the CLE 300 and 450 get all-wheel-drive as standard. The CLE 200's all-wheel-drive version is something customers have to opt into.
In terms of the exterior design, the new CLE's front end is quite similar to the new C-Class. However, it features a longer muscular bonnet along with a shark nose effect for the grille.

The sides look rather clean, which highlights the snazzy wheels and the gorgeously curving roof, the effect of which is further enhanced by the heavily tapered rear end of the car.
The rear section of the new CLE also features some angular taillights that suit the coupe rather well. Unfortunately, Merc decided in their usual way to endow the CLE with fake exhausts that flank the rear diffuser.

Step inside the new CLE and the C-Class comparisons will continue with the new coupe sporting an 11.9-inch driver's display and a portrait-oriented 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display.
The twin display setup sports the latest iteration of Merc's MBUX software sports and the voice recognition system first seen on the new E-Class. The rest of the cabin is draped in leather and other soft-touch material, with the CLE sporting a 2+2 seating layout.

Mercedes is working on even more versions of the CLE. A plug-in hybrid version of the coupe is currently being worked on, as are the AMG models, which the top-spec 63 model expected to sport a hybrid system with an inline-6 engine.
Thoughts About The Mercedes CLE
Mercedes continues to streamline its lineup, and the latest move by the marque is the arrival of the new CLE, which replaces the two-door versions of the C and E-Class. With a hybrid AMG model in the works, expect the most mental CLE to sport around 700bhp when it arrives.
