Today's stage saw riders and drivers travel east across the sands of Saudi Arabia from the nation's capital of Riyadh to Haradh, a distance of 686 kilometres which included a 358km long special stage.

Bikes

Stage 9 saw Husqvarna's Luciano Benavides become the first rider to claim multiple stage wins at Dakar 2023. Benavides finished the stage in a time of 3 hours, 18 minutes and 44 seconds.

KTM rider Toby Price claimed the second spot in today's stage with the Australian coming in just 1 minute and 2 seconds behind Benavides. Husqvarna's Skyler Howes claimed the final podium spot, finishing the stage, 2 minutes and 57 seconds behind his teammate.

Hero's Franco Caimi was the best of the finishers known to Indian fans of the Dakar. Caimi finished today's stage in the 8th spot, 10 minutes and 7 seconds behind Benavides. The lone remaining Sherco rider, Lorenzo Santolino, finished the stage in the 10th spot, 13 minutes and 13 seconds behind the leader.

Hero's Sebastian Buhler ended today's stage in 15th place, 16 minutes and 55 seconds behind Benavides. Stage 8 winner, Ross Branch ended today's stage in 28th place, 25 minutes and 56 seconds behind Benavides.

In the overall rankings, Skyler Howes leads Dakar 2023 by just 3 seconds from KTM's Toby Price. Today's winner Benavides is third overall, 5 minutes and 9 seconds behind his teammate Howes.

Sherco's Santolino is 10th overall, 40 minutes and 38 seconds behind Howes. The best-ranked Hero rider at Dakar 2023 is Franco Caimi who occupies the 14th spot and is currently 1 hour, 22 minutes and 39 seconds behind Howes.

Sebastian Buhler currently sits 25th overall and the German is currently 4 hours, 3 minutes and 55 seconds behind the overall leader. Ross Branch sits 34th overall, 6 hours, 44 minutes and 42 seconds behind Howes.

Sebastien Loeb claimed his third stage victory of Dakar 2023 as he blasted across the dunes in a time of 3 hours, 7 minutes and 24 seconds. Loe held off Teltonika Racing's Lithuanian driver Vaidotas Zala who finished the stage, 57 seconds behind the Frenchman.

GCK Motorsports driver Guerlain Chicherit ensured that all three drivers on the podium drove Prodrive Hunters. Chicherit ended the day, 2 minutes and 8 seconds behind his countryman Loeb.

The biggest story of the day at Dakar 2023 was once again claimed by Carlos Sainz Sr of Audi. El Matador flipped his Audi when jumping over a dune just after the 6-kilometre mark. At first, it looked like he had thrown in the towel after he was taken away on a helicopter after complaining about chest pain. However, in the air, Sainz asked the medical chopper to turn around and take him to his car. At the time of writing this article, there have been no updates about Sainz.

In the general rankings, overall leader Nasser Al-Attiyah, who finished today's stage in eighth, extended his lead even further after his teammate and previous 2nd place holder Henk Lategan lost quite a bit of time. Al-Attiyah is now 1 hour, 21 minutes and 57 seconds ahead of Overdrive Racing's Brazilian driver Lucas Moraes.

Sebastien Loeb climbed up to 3rd overall with today's win and is now 1 hour, 43 minutes and 8 seconds behind Al Attiyah. Toyota's Lategan and De Villiers now sit 4th and 5th overall.

Thoughts About Dakar 2023 Stage 9

The 9th stage of Dakar 2023 saw Benavides and Loeb claim victories today. While the bike category looks set to go down to the wire, Al-Attiyah's control over the cars category remains unchallenged.

Tomorrow's stage will see riders and drivers head south to Shyabah ahead of two days inside the Empty Quarter. Tomorrow's ride will see contestants travel a total of 624km which includes a 114km long special stage.
