Mahindra To Launch Electric XUV300 in Early 2023 - Will Be Larger Than ICE Sibling
Indian carmaker Mahindra has confirmed that the electric version of the XUV300 SUV will launch in the first quarter of 2023.
Indian SUV specialist Mahindra has confirmed that the electric version of the XUV300 SUV will launch in the first quarter of 2023.
Mahindra had first revealed the electric XUV300 in concept guise at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo. Last year, the Mumbai-based carmaker revealed its plans to launch as many as 8 electric vehicles by the year 2027. The electric version of the XUV300 will be the first of the barrage of new electric vehicles from Mahindra.
The news of the upcoming launch of the new XUV300 electric was shared by the company at a press conference, however, the new XUV300 electric is expected to be unveiled to the world a bit before hat with the carmaker set to unveil three new SUVs in July as part of its Mahindra Born Electric lineup.
The Mahindra Born Electric lineup has been conceptualized and designed by the Mahindra Advanced Design Europe studio based out of England, which is headed up by the company's Chief Design Officer, Pratap Bose, formerly of Tata Motors.
Mahindra also revealed that the electric version of the XUV300 would be larger than its internal combustion engine powered siblings. Mahindra revealed that the electric XUV300 SUV will be 4.2-metres long which is a good 200mm longer than the internal combustion engine versions of the SUV.
A report from another publication suggests that Mahindra will be using the longer body structure of the Tivoli SUV from its bankrupt South Korean subsidiary Ssangyong which will provide the electric SUV with a lot more bootspace compared to its ICE siblings.
The ICE powered versions of the Mahindra XUV300 currently use a shortened version of the Tivoli's setup to avail the benefits provided by the Indian government to sub-4-metre vehicles. The report also suggests that the new electric SUV could bear the XUV400 badge.
Not much is known about the powertrain of the new electric XUV300 but the new SUV expected to take on the Nexon EV from a resurgent Tata Motors, which has become the undisputed leader of the Indian electric car market. Tata currently offers two versions of the electric Nexon EV SUV with the more powerful EV Max version offering a range of 417 kilometres on a single charge of its 40.1kWh battery pack. The new XUV300 electric from Mahindra is expected to atleast match the output of its electric rival which is currently the nation's best selling electric car.
Mahindra also recently announced a partnership with the Volkswagen Group which would see it test out components from the German automotive giant's MEB platform for use in its lineup of Mahindra Born Electric Vision SUVs that will be unveiled in July.
Thoughts On The Electric Mahindra XUV300
The arrival of the electric XUV300 in early 2023 signals the start of what Mahindra hopes will be a resurgent return to the electric car market it once dominated. Hopefully, Mahindra's return in full strength to the electric vehicle market will provide the onus for more carmakers to push ahead with the timing of their arrival into the Indian electric car market.
