Toyota bZ4x Electric SUV Revealed
Japanese automotive giant Toyota has revealed the bZ4x, its first-ever battery-powered electric vehicle. The Toyota bZ4x is the Japanese carmaker's first bespoke electric vehicle and was first revealed in concept guise a few months ago in April.
The all-new Toyota bZ4x sits on the Japanese automotive giant's bespoke e-TNGA battery-electric vehicle platform. The bZ4x SUV draws power from a 71.4kWh battery pack that is housed underneath its floor, maximising chassis rigidity and interior space while also lowering the centre of gravity of the new SUV.
The new Toyota bZ4x is offered in two both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive guises. The front-wheel drive variant of bZ4x is powered by a single electric motor that produces 201bhp and 265Nm of peak torque. This allows the front-wheel drive bZ4x to sprint from 0-100km/h in 8.4 seconds.
The more potent all-wheel drive variant has been developed with the help of Subaru. The all-wheel-drive bZ4x uses dual motors that push out 215bhp and 336Nm of torque. The all-wheel drive version of the Toyota bZ4x can sprint from 0-100km/h in 7.7 seconds which is over half a second quicker than its front-wheel drive sibling.
The all-wheel drive version of the new bZ4x from Toyota also features multiple all-terrain driving modes through its XMode system. These include driving modes for driving in tough off-road conditions including snow and mud.
The 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack powering the all-new Toyota bZ4x electric SUV has a rated range of 450 kilometres as per the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) standards. Toyota offers both slow and fast charging options.
DC fast charging speeds are limited to 150kW, which allows for an 80 per cent charge in just 30 minutes. For those wanting to charge their bZ4x at home, the optional 11kW AC charger will allow owners to fully charge their electric Toyota SUV overnight when connected to a compatible wall socket.
The exterior design of the Toyota bZ4x has evolved from that of the concept revealed earlier this year. The exterior still has quite a few sharp lines upfront with its sleek DRLs and the blanked out section on what would usually be the grille on a regular internal combustion Toyota.
The wheel arches and the front wings are done up in black to give the electric SUV a more rugged look. The wheel arches play host to 20-inch alloy wheels. The windscreen at the rear meets the wraparound taillamps (connected together by a lightbar) at quite a sharp angle which the tailgate section exaggerates even more.
The insides of the bZ4x are quite roomy claims Toyota, a feeling that is helped along by the presence of the panoramic sunroof. The driver's instrumentation is contained in a 7-inch TFT display that promotes Toyota's "hands on the wheel, eyes on the road" philosophy. Toyota also offers a wing-shaped steering wheel, which does remind you of the yoke setup on a Tesla Model S Plaid.
The large horizontal infotainment display allows for OTA updates and also features what seem to be touch-sensitive controls for the climate control system underneath it. The bZx4 has a boot capacity of 452 litres, which should be enough for most people.
Thoughts on the Toyota bZx4
The Toyota bZx4 is the Japanese car giant's first battery-powered EV and the first of many vehicles under its beyond Zero (hence the bZ in the name) brand. We are not sure if Toyota will ever bring the bZx4 to India, but if this is Toyota's future, we are all for it.
