Honda City Diesel Variants Discontinued In India: New-Generation Sedan Launch Delayed
Honda Cars India has removed the diesel engine option on their current-generation City sedan in the market. The BS4 Honda City diesel variants have been discontinued, with the sedan now available exclusively in the BS6-compliant petrol models.
Honda had not updated the 1.5-litre diesel offering on the City sedan to comply with the BS6 emission norms. Hence, with the new regulations coming into effect from the 1st of April, Honda updated its website, removing the BS4 diesel engine from the options list.
The current-generation Honda City is now offered with a single engine option. This comes in the form of a BS6-compliant i-VTEC petrol engine producing 115bhp and 145Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated five-speed manual or a seven-step CVT automatic with steering-mounted paddle shifters.
The prices for the BS6-petrol engine powered Honda City now starts at Rs 9.91 lakh for the base variant. The top-spec model, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 14.31 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom (Delhi).
Honda is currently working on introducing the next-generation City sedan in the Indian market. The new (2020) Honda City was unveiled earlier this year and was expected to go on sale in India in the first quarter of 2020. However, the company is said to have postponed the launch due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic affecting the country.
The COVID-19 pandemic has put a stop to all operations, including production, sales and service of vehicles, not only for Honda but for all brands. The government also ordered a country-wide lockdown on the 24th March, which will end on the 14th of April 2020.
This lockdown has had a major effect on sales for the entire auto industry, with many companies registering a decline of more than 50%. The downward spiral of sales is expected to extend to April and probably even May. This will be due to the low customer sentiments to make any big purchase during the current situation.
Honda Cars India themselves have witnessed a major decline in sales in the month of March 2020. The company registered a massive 79% decline with just 3,697 units of sales in the previous month, compared to 17,202 units in March 2019.
Thoughts On The Honda City Diesel Variants Discontinued In India
Honda does offer a 1.5-litre BS6-compliant diesel engine on the Amaze compact sedan. However, this engine could be offered only on the next-generation City, once launched in India. The Honda City sedan rivals the likes of the Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento and the Hyundai Verna in the Indian market.
