Hyundai Confirms Diesel Engine Upgradation to BS-VI Norms — Will Not Discontinue Diesel Engines

Hyundai launched its first sub-four metre compact-SUV, the Venue in the Indian market recently. The new Hyundai Venue is available with a starting price of Rs 6.50 lakh, ex-showroom (India).

During the launch of the all-new Venue SUV, Hyundai confirmed their plans regarding diesel engines in the future. According to Hyundai, the company will continue to offer diesel-powered products in the future, with no plans of discontinuation.

With the BS-VI emission norms being implemented from April 2020, many manufacturers have announced they will be completely discontinuing the production of diesel engines in the country. The reason behind the discontinuation is the additional cost required to upgrade diesel engines. The upgradation of diesel engines to BS-VI norms would make its costlier than petrol by almost Rs 2 lakh.

Many manufacturers, including Maruti Suzuki has hence decided to completely stop production of the diesel-powered models in the country.

Hyundai currently offers two diesel engine options: 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre units. Hyundai's sister brand Kia will also be offering a diesel engine option in the form of a new 1.5-litre BS-VI compliant unit. It is yet to be confirmed if Hyundai replaces their two diesel units with the single 1.5-litre diesel or upgrades their current engines to comply with the new emission norms.

Hyundai recently launched the Venue SUV in the Indian market. The new Hyundai Venue is also available with a single diesel engine option, in the form of the 1.4-litre offering. This engine also powers other Hyundai products such as the Verna and Creta. The 1.4-litre diesel engine produces 89bhp and 220Nm of torque. The Venue SUV gets a six-speed manual gearbox as standard with this diesel unit

The prices for the diesel-powered Hyundai Venue starts of at Rs 7.75 lakh for the base 'E' variant and goes all the way up to Rs 10.84 lakh for the top-spec ' SX(O)' variant. All prices are ex-showroom (India).

Thoughts On The Hyundai Diesel Engine Plans

Hyundai has confirmed that they will continue to offer diesel engines on their products. However, it is yet to be seen if they will upgrade their current line of diesel engines or make use of the new engine from their sister brand Kia. Currently, Hyundai is on a high from the response received to their compact-SUV, the Venue in the Indian market.
