Volvo Reveals Polestar 1 Hybrid Coupe — You'll Need To Subscribe To Drive
Polestar, Volvo's former performance sub-brand has revealed its first standalone car, the Polestar 1.
Polestar, the former performance sub-brand of Swedish carmaker Volvo has revealed its first ever car, dubbed 'Polestar 1'. The Polestar 1 will hit the streets in 2019 and will be made available to owners via a subscription service.
The Polestar 1 heralds the start of a new electrified performance brand and the new coupe will be the only car in its lineup to feature an internal combustion engine. Upcoming models including the Polestar 2 & 3 will be powered by electricity alone with one of the two new cars set to take on the Tesla Model 3.
Powering the front wheels of the Polestar 1 is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol that kicks out 338bhp and along with a starter/generator that is good for another 39bhp. The rear axle is powered by a set of electric motors good for 215bhp.
The total output of the Polestar 1's hybrid powertrain is 592bhp and 1,000Nm of torque. The Polestar 1 is capable of sprinting from 0-100kph in under four seconds and the hybrid Grand Tourer has an electric-only range of 150 kilometres.

The Polestar 1 is smaller than the car it is based on, the Volvo S90. However, it also 230 kilos lighter than the S90 thanks to extensive use of carbon-fibre for body parts which also helps increase torsional rigidity by 45 percent.
The Polestar 1 is the first car to be fitted with the new Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension from Ohlins. The new system is the first ever system from Ohlins that can be controlled by drivers from inside the car.
The brakes on the Polestar are 400mm discs fitted with Akebono six-piston callipers. The PoleStar 1 also features torque vectoring by using the planetary gears of the rear axle to shift torque between either wheel through corners.
In terms of design, the front end of the Polestar 1 looks similar to Volvo's sedans, with the Thor's Hammer headlights while the Polestar badge now sits on the front of the bonnet instead of hogging the centre of the grille. The sides of the car are clean while at the rear, the C-shaped taillights take centre stage at the rear.
