Toyota Camry Hybrid Production Stopped In India — Here's Why
Toyota Camry Hybrid Production Stopped In India.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor has stopped the production of the Camry Hybrid sedan in India. The production line earmarked for Camry at Toyota's manufacturing plant in Bangalore has come to a halt said the company.
As per a report from ET Auto, the Japanese carmaker said that the production of the Camry hybrid had been stopped due to the Goods and Service Tax (GST) and the attendant cess on hybrids has made it expensive to produce the sedan.
Toyota Camry Hybrid sales have dropped significantly after prices increased on the imposition of 25 percent GST along with 15 percent additionalcess for luxury cars.
The report states that sales of the Toyota Camry Hybrid fell by nearly 73 percent during the September quarter compared to the same period in 2016. The sale of the Toyota Camry Hybrid has not been stopped as the company has some inventory left before the production was halted.
Toyota has invested Rs 15 crore in the Camry Hybrid facility along with Rs 24 crore for training, campaigns, and service. However, with the higher taxation on hybrids, the company has shelved its plan to introduce a wide range of hybrids in India.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid can run in a purely electric mode with an internal combustion engine. With India's ambitious plan to stop producing petrol and diesel cars by 2030, hybrids could help reduce pollution in the country.
