Turbo Lag Elimination System From Volvo — PowerPulse
Turbo lag elimination? Learn how Volvo eliminates turbo lag. More about Volvo PowerPulse here.
When it comes to Turbocharged engines, there is that one thing that comes associated with it, just like bread and butter - Turbo lag.

You might have experienced a short delay in power delivery when you floor a turbo car (predominantly a diesel) hard. This is the reason why some automotive enthusiasts prefer a Naturally Aspirated engine over a turbocharged engine.

Volvo has something called ‘PowerPulse' to prevent a turbo lag. The patented system is present in Volvo's D5 Diesel engine having two sequential turbos. It employs compressed air to spool (process of unloading the air from a turbo at high pressure) the turbo within no time.

The system uses an electric compressor which sucks in clean air from the filter duct (intake system), and compresses and stores it in a pressurised container.

When the throttle is wide open (accelerator is fully depressed), the container opens via a valve mechanism and the compressed air is forced into the exhaust manifold. The air is then transferred into the cylinder just like any turbo (turbocharger pushes exhaust gases into the cylinder to supply more air for combustion).

A sequential turbo system is used here i.e the compressed air first rotates a smaller turbo (using clean air) and that in turn spins a larger turbo (using exhaust gases), ultimately supplying extra air for combustion into the cylinder.

DriveSpark Thinks!
Volvo Cars have got quite a good portfolio at being masters of automotive innovation. They have confirmed that all of their products will be electrified in some way, by 2019. The ‘PowerPulse' system wouldn't seem that complicated if you know some technical aspects about cars. But still, it was Volvo who first did it a few years back.
