If Rumors Could Be True! Alfa Romeo Might Join Sauber For F1 Return
Alfa Romeo Could Partner Sauber For F1 Return
Alfa Romeo was the first team to win the Formula One World Driver Championship in 1950 with the famed 158 and then with the 159 in 1951.
However, in 1952 Alfa Romeo decided to withdraw from F1 after the Italian government refused to fund the expensive design of a new car to replace the 13-year racing machine. The carmaker again returned to F1 in 1979 and raced till 1985 but not with much success.
Now, the British marque wants to enter the famed Formula 1 racing. Rumors are doing the rounds that Sauber could partner Alfa Romeo for the latter's return to Grand Prix racing. Sauber is expected to reveal its 2018 driver lineup for the next season with Ferrari new star Charles LeClerc likely making the jump to Formula 1 next season.
With one spot seems closed, the second driver's name doing the rounds is the young Antonio Giovinazzi and perhaps Marcus Ericsson. Amidst this change in driver lineup, Sauber is also looking to strengthen its relationship with Ferrari over and above its current partnership.
Reports have emerged that Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne has considered the idea of therebranding of Sauber's customer engines as Alfa Romeos as part of moves to strengthen the alliance between the two teams.
The chief executive is quoted by Italian media saying, "Alfa Romeo in F1 could become a fine breeding ground for young Italian drivers. The best one, Giovinazzi, is already with us, but there are others besides him, and they are struggling to find room. Alfa Romeo, more than our customer teams, could offer them that space."
DriveSpark Thinks!
There is no definite timeline when Alfa Romeo would make their return to F1, but with Ferrari serious in getting the four-leaf clover on the back of a GP, the entry of Alfa Romeo is just a matter of official announcement rather than the time.
