Maruti Swift AMT Possible Launch In Second Half Of 2016
With the AMT (Automatic Manual Transmission) gripping the sales of cars in India, Maruti is planning to introduce the AMT model in Swift as well.
According to Financial Express, Maruti Suzuki has sold more than 1 lakh AMT/AGS cars in India. Now Maruti wants to extend the AMT in many other models. The limited edition Maruti Swift is expected to be launched in May or June of 2016.
Maruti would want to expand its automatic gearbox feature because of the 82% increase in sales of the AMT/AGS in the last fiscal. In 2015-16 alone, they sold over 54,700 units of AMT variants mainly driven by the sales of its Celerio.
Maruti has partnered with Magneti Marelli to source the AMT/AGS and has been well received in the country. Maruti was first to introduce the AMT in India and has got a winner with Celerio. Hyundai too is looking to move into the AMT market with the introduction of the gearbox in its range of vehicles next year.
The Maruti Swift will continue to house the same engine and the AMT/AGS could be offered with the diesel engine only. The Swift is powered by 1.3-litre engine which churns out 74bhp and 200Nm of torque.
Next up could be the Vitara Brezza which could be launched with an AMT during the festive time in India.
The AMT/AGS is well received in India now compared to about three or four years back, this is due to lack of awareness of the automatic gearbox. However, with Maruti Celerio, the company has put some confidence to the automatic gearbox. It's a great option to drive in the traffic-riddled cities in India.
