Mercedes May Quit F1 If It Does Not Win Soon

Union Investment, a major Mercedes shareholders group has expressed its unhappiness over FIA's tough stand regarding the latest fiasco involving a secret tyre test with Pirelli in Barcelona. Mercedes faced the wrath of FIA after receiving complaints from Ferrari and Red Bull. Autocar has learned that shareholders want Mercedes to pull out of F1 if the punishment dealt is too harsh. Clearly a blackmailing tactic, but a valid one looking at it from their perspective.
Autocar quotes Michael Muders, manager at Union Investment as saying, "Mercedes-Benz must get out of F1. The company spends hundred of millions here, and it doesn't bring anyone anything."
Even if it does get away lightly, the future is not certain for Mercedes in the expensive motorsports. A recent Mercedes F1 team reshuffle was seen by observes as a clear indication of the management's intentions to quit if on-track performance does not improve soon.
Any teams involvement in the sport is largely decided by the success it has. Quitting of lower tier teams is the clearest indication of this. But if a team such as Mercedes pulls out of the sport it will have profound consequences overall and could threaten the very existence of the sport in the long run.
