2014 Grand Prix of America Cancelled, Again

By Ganesh

The organizers of the planned Grand Prix of America are finding it harder than anyone ever thought, to get the show going. The problem, once again, is lack of funding and this time F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has had enough, prompting him to say "it is such a muddle and a mess that it is not worth doing," CNN reports.

The Grand Prix of America has been a dream of Ecclestone himself who has wanted to make it a reality since the 1980s. The planned race in New Jersey, if it happens, promises to a spectacle as the street circuit runs alongside the Hudson river, with the spectacular Manhattan skyline as backdrop.

The F1 Group announces the initial calendar for next year's season in September and the final dates and venue list comes out in December. Unfortunately, the organizers, led by multi-millionaire Leo Hindery, along with the UBS bank, have been unable raise the $100 million required to hold the race yet. It remains to be seen whether Ecclestone would allow the race to go forward if by some remote chance the money is arranged before December.

The organizers themselves are still optimistic and believe the race will go forward, but the same cannot be said about Ecclestone who has clearly stated the race was off the cards for next year.

Grand Prix of America is among the few races which was given an F1 contract before the finances were in place. The earlier example was Donington circuit in UK, which incidentally, also failed to raise money and was subsequently cancelled. For the detailed story read the CNN article. The 2014 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas is still on.
