MSIL Management Ups Ante Against Manesar Workers

Maruti Suzuki Manesar
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), India's largest carmaker has initiated stringent measures to improve quality of work at its plant in Manesar. MSIL has already suspended 10 workers and dismissed five workers after several quality issues were reported last week.

Recent reports say the company is now asking its workers at Manesar to sign a 'Good Conduct Bond' before they enter the factory to work. Workers who refuse to sign the bond are not being allowed to enter the plant. These new development will mean production at Manesar will be severely affected in the coming days.

A company source stated: “The company is asking its workers to sign a good conduct bond before entering the factory. Whosoever does not sign, will not be allowed to get inside the factory premises and work, and hence would be deemed to be on strike."

MSIL's management decided to take severe action against erring workers after it found only 96 cars out of the produced 437 cars passed quality tests. An unnamed source has stated the quality issues were deliberate attempts by the workers. The management has increased security at the plant to prevent any untoward incidents.

Maruti Suzuki workers who had sought recognition to a new workers union at Manesar see this as a retaliatory measure by the management. These workers had gone on a 13-day strike which had resulted in the carmaker suffering losses of over Rs.630 crores. Shiv Kumar, who has been leading the strike has said the move to force workers to sign a bond was initiated after the new union was not recognised by the Haryana government.

A MSIL representative has stated the good conduct bond was needed after they found workers were intentionally stalling work. Production targets were not being met and the quality of cars were also substandard. The suspended workers have been accused of sabotage and causing quality issues.

If this tussle between the MSIL management and its workers at Manesar continues, it surely spells trouble for the carmaker. The plant produces the recently launched new Swift hatchback which has a huge demand. If there is a flare up and a strike at Manesar, the waiting period of the new car will definitely cross the current period of four months.
