Kawasaki Ninja ZX-25R With Four-Cylinder 250cc Engine Under Development?

Kawasaki is working on a 250cc 4-cylinder engine according to reports. The 250cc engine is touted to produce around 45bhp and will take the quarter-litre motorcycle segment to the next level.

This however, has not been confirmed officially but this information is based on a poster that has surfaced on Gridoto. Small capacity, high-performance motorcycles were all the rage back in the 1980s and 1990s.

The big four Japanese motorcycle manufacturers – Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha – fought tooth and nail in this segment. The motorcycles were fast and loud, thanks to their high-revving engines. These motorcycles however died due to their gas-guzzling nature and made way for less-powerful but more economical twin-cylinder and single-cylinder engines.

Since 2018, rumours emerged about the rise of the four-cylinder quarter litre motorcycles. This time though, we have an image to put to the rumours. According to the poster, the motorcycle will be called the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-25R, and this in our opinion would be right as Kawasaki had on sale the Ninja 250 which was a twin-cylinder.

The Japanese brand now has on sale the Ninja 300 and the Ninja 400 as well, and both are powered by twin-cylinder engines. If Kawasaki had to launch a hardcore performance oriented motorcycle in this segment, it will come with the 'ZX' prefix and the 'R' suffix.

At this moment, one could say that the picture is a rendering, and it very well could be. However, that picture is one very realistic rendering, and too realistic to say that it is just a rumour. Up front, the design of the headlamp appears to have taken inspiration from the litre-class ZX-10R.

The body work, fuel tank and rear cowling have been taken from the Ninja H2R. Very neatly placed under the tank is the ZX-25R badging. The engine size looks just about right for a four-cylinder 250cc motorcycle, and the headers and downpipes look outright magnificent.

The exhaust pipes have then been routed under the engine and emerges under the seat, offset to the right. Four-cylinder, 250cc motors have always been about the performance. During the quarter-litre performance bikes race of the 80s and 90s, Kawasaki produced the Ninja ZX250R.

The liquid-cooled, inline-four-cylinder, 250cc engine produced a maximum power output of 45bhp and a peak torque output of 24.5Nm back in the day. Fast forward a few decades, and technology has advanced in a great way.

If such a motorcycle is launched in 2019 or 2020, it is safe to say that the output will be way over 50bhp. Small capacity four-cylinder engines can be tuned to rev up to a mind-boggling 20,000RPM. The Kawasaki Ninja ZX250R from the 80s touched 19,000RPM and that is just mighty.

Thoughts On Kawasaki Developing Four-Cylinder 250cc Engine For Ninja ZX25R

We have been hearing rumours about this motorcycle for a while now, and Kawasaki on the other hand has remained mute on the topic. The company has neither confirmed, nor denied the development of a 250cc, four-cylinder engine. This still means there is hope for us enthusiast to hear the high-revving engines once again.
