Michael Schumacher's 2001 F1 Championship Winning Car Auctioned Off For $7.5 Million

The final price tag of $7,504,000 for the Ferrari F2001, according to RM Sotheby's, is a record for a modern Formula One car and quite a way bit more than the auction house's initial estimate of $4 million (Rs 25.97 crore).

The Ferrari F2001 in question was driven by Schumacher to victory in 2001 at F1's most prestigious race, the Monaco Grand Prix.

It would take the Prancing Horse 16 years to get back onto the top step in the principality of Monaco, when earlier this year, Sebastian Vettel repeated Schumacher's feat.

However, the F2001 what makes this car (chassis 211) even more significant for the faithful fans of Ferrari and Schumacher is the fact that it was in this very car that the German driver got his hands on his 4th Driver's championship by winning the 2001 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Chassis number 211 is in racing condition and Ferrari has agreed to help with the transport and storage of the car. In its heydays lapping the streets of Monte Carlo, the F2001 was powered by a 3.0-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine that produced 800 to 900bhp depending on the tuning.

An undetermined portion of that record price will go to Michael Schumacher's charity, Keep Fighting, which advocates for safer roads among other things. Michael Schumacher is currently still recovering from the traumatic head injuries he sustained in 2013 after a skiing accident.
