KTM Engine Maps To Be Officially Made Available In India [Update: Not]

By Ganesh

[Update: According to a new report on Overdrive, KTM will not offer alternate engine maps for the 200 Duke and 390 Duke. Though it is technically possible to alter the fuel ignition parameters by reprogramming the ECU, it would require a special equipment to do so. The reprogramming kit/equipment is only available at Bajaj R&D facilities and the company has, reportedly, no plans to provide these to dealerships.

KTM does offer alternate engine maps in other countries, but only for a few selected high performance motorcycles. These engine maps can change the way the engine behaves; it can either increase performance, which is generally accompanied with a fall in fuel efficiency and vice versa. Engine maps can also vary torque and power output relative to engine rpm.]

KTM will soon become the first manufacturer in India to offer its own engine maps to customers. Simply put, engine maps are a set of instructions that tell the engine how to burn fuel and how to deliver power. Different engine maps will extract a different response from the engine and are most often used to increase a bike's performance.

It is common among KTM owners to use aftermarket engine maps, but the downside is, doing so nullifies the manufacturer's warranty. However, with the company offering KTM Austria certified engine maps to its customers the issue of warranty geting void does not arise. Also, since these maps would be thoroughly tested, there would be no reliability issues.

KTM will offer two engine maps in India - one for increasing performance and the other for city use. New engine maps would be installed on to the ECU at KTM service centres for a price. The ECUs can only hold one map at a time.

The existing Duke range, along with the upcoming RC series would receive certified engine maps.

In other KTM news, the company is reportedly planning to launch a 24X7 roadside assistance programme for its customers. Dubbed Orange Assist, the programme will provide those enrolled with services like flatbed pickup van in case of break down, fuel delivery and emergency assistance in case of an accident. The service would be effective within a 100 km radius of a KTM service centre.
