BMW S 1000 XR Sports Tourer Teased Ahead Of India Launch: To Rival Kawasaki Versys 1000

BMW is expected to launch the 2020 S 1000 XR in India sometime during the next two months. The adventure/sport tourer is based on the popular supersport motorcycle from the brand, the S 1000 RR.

The 2020 S 1000 XR was showcased by the company at the 2019 EICMA last year. The new motorcycle features a host of new technologies and added equipment over the previous-generation model including a new front fascia.

Other updated on the 2020 S 1000 XR includes a two-step adjustable windscreen, a sharper nose, revised bodywork and new symmetrical headlights; among others. The new motorcycle is also 10 kilograms lighter as compared to the previous model. In addition to this, the engine and the suspension set up has also been re-tuned on the new model for better performance.

Speaking of the engine, the BMW S 1000 XR is powered by a 999cc four-cylinder engine. It produces a maximum power of 164bhp at 11,000rpm and a peak torque of 114Nm at 9,250rpm. The engine comes mated a six-speed gearbox with slip assisted clutch. The company claims that the new engine is tuned to provide a stronger performance than before between 3,000rpm and 10,000rpm range. That is the zone which is used by most riders on the sport-tourers like the S 1000 XR.

Suspension duties on the motorcycle are handled by a 45mm USD fork at the front and a mono-shock set up at the rear as. The suspensions at both ends are also semi-active electronic units as standard. BMW has re-tuned the suspension to offer better comfort in the soft setting, and sharper responses in the dynamic setting. It also uses bigger pistons to regulate the oil pressure in a better way as compared to the older setup.

Braking on the motorcycle is done via 320mm twin disc brakes at the front and a 265mm disc brake at the rear, supported by a dual-channel ABS. The motorcycle features 17-inch wheels at both ends.

The S 1000 XR also features a TFT instrument cluster a host of electronic rider aids. These include four riding modes: Rain, Road, Dynamic, and Dynamic Pro, traction control, hill-hold control, and wheelie control; among others. The company also offers a host of options with the motorcycle to choose from including a bi-directional quick shifter.

Once launched, the BMW S 1000 XR will rival the Kawasaki Versys 1000 and the Ducati Multistrada 1260 S in the Indian market. BMW is expected to price the upcoming S 1000 XR at around Rs 18 lakh ex-showroom India.
