The Jawa 42 is priced at Rs 1.55 lakh and the Jawa is priced at Rs 1.64 lakh. The motorcycles are essentially the same underneath, but feature a few aesthetic and functional differences. The Jawa 42 and the Jawa are powered by the same liquid-cooled, 293cc, single-cylinder engine with a maximum power output of 27bhp and a peak torque output of 28Nm.

Neo-Retro Design And Styling

The jawa 42 features a neo-retro design that makes it stand out. While the Jawa might have a proper classic look, the Jawa 42 looks more modern while still retaining the classic styling. It features a circular headlamp, a teardrop-shaped tank, retro-design side panels and an elongated mudguard with tail-lamp mounted on it - it is a design that is quite timeless.

The matte-finish paint job with the Jawa logo neatly painted on either side further makes it look more modern and contemporary. The Jawa 42 also gets the right amount of chrome with accents around the headlamps, the turn signal indicators. Even the engine casing and entire exhaust system is finished in chrome.

Offset Instrument Cluster

Jawa Motorcycles has again gone the neo-retro way with the instrument cluster. It features an offset instrument cluster that harks back to motorcycles in the 1950s. The single-pod instrument cluster comes with an analogue speedometer and fuel gauge that is embedded within the speedo.

The needle spins from the top-right side to the top-left side and even the fonts used to mark the speed and fuel levels are retro. Giving it a modern touch is the small digital display that displays the odometer and the time.

Liquid-Cooled Engine

The 293cc engine used in the Jawa 42 has been designed to look retro, just like the jawa Motorcycles of yore. This includes the shape of the cylinder, the faux intake manifold cover, the twin-exhaust, etc. However, this engine is nowhere close to being old. It is based on the engine used in the Mahindra Mojo and is therefore liquid-cooled.

When looked at from a distance, it would seem like the Jawa 42 is powered by an air-cooled engine thanks to cleverly concealed piping. Even the radiator is concealed to a certain extent and is visible only when viewed from the front. The radiator housing too has been given a simple and retro-design, hence the engine, like the rest of the motorcycle is modern, but looks classy and retro.

Twin Exhaust System

The 2018 Jawa Motorcycles bring back the iconic twin exhausts that were Jawa's signature back in the 1960s. The exhausts were called by many names, including pea-shooter exhausts, double barrel exhausts, double silencer, etc. But every single person loved the exhaust note that the two-stroke engines produced through the long, symmetrical pipes.

Jawa has not just brought back the design but has also managed to recreate a similar exhaust note. The new exhaust note was shown in the official TV commercial.

ABS

The Jawa 42 is neo-retro in every sense of the term and it being equipped with ABS stands testimony to the same. The Jawa 42's brakes are just adequate, with a 280mm disc brake up front and a 153mm drum brake at the rear.

However, the front disc brake is assisted by an Anti-lock Braking System and this reduces stopping distances considerably.
