New Jawa 42 Review (First Look): The Affordable Yet Desirable Jawa
Jawa Motorcycles has re-entered the Indian market, with the launch of two new motorcycles; Jawa and Jawa 42 (Forty Two). The Czech motorcycle brand also unveiled a bobber-style motorcycle, called the Perak. However, the Jawa Perak is scheduled to be introduced in the market at a later stage.
Both the Jawa and the Jawa 42 bring back the essence of the iconic motorcycles of the 50s. Jawa 42 is the entry-level model and is priced at Rs 1.55 lakh, ex-showroom (Delhi).
Here is a quick first look at the different aspects of the new Jawa 42 motorcycle. We will get to ride the Forty Two in the near future, and we will be providing a more detailed review of the motorcycle.
Before starting, you might be interested in checking out our First Look Review of the 'Jawa'; the only motorcycle on the market which has been named after the brand itself!
Design & Styling
The overall design of the Jawa 42 brings back the essence of the classic motorcycle designs of the 50s. The clean retro lines, polished chrome and classic curves blend perfectly with the modern day engineering used.
The Jawa motorcycle offers a timeless and authentic design reminiscent of the iconic motorcycles of the past. The new Jawa 42 features a clean teardrop-shaped tank with the Jawa badging on either side. The wide seats offer a comfortable ride while slightly tapering towards the rear, to give a definitive character to the rear section.
The Jawa 42 comes with chrome accents all-around the motorcycle. The Jawa 42 gets chrome accents around the headlamps, side indicators and rear coil spring suspension setup.
The rear comes with a small taillamp setup, just above the number plate. The model name "forty two" is also hand-painted between the taillight and the number plate, adding to the character at the back. The motorcycle also comes with black grabrails while the twin-exhaust on either side further adds to the drama.
Engine, Performance & Mileage
The Jawa 42 is powered by a 293cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. It produces 27bhp and 28Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to a six-speed mesh gearbox. This is the same setup as seen on the ‘Jawa' motorcycle.
The engine on the Jawa motorcycles is based on the same unit powering the Mahindra Mojo. However, the engine is set up differently with a varied bore and stroke. Engineers in Jawa have also tuned the motorcycles in a way that they produce a similar exhaust note to the original, from back in the olden days — hear the sound of the new Jawa motorcycles here!
The modern-classic motorcycle also claims to offer the performance, similar to the iconic motorcycles of the past. The Jawa 42 comes with a flat torque curve and good mid-range as well. The low-end torque on the motorcycle has also improved, which further aids in daily city stop and go traffic. The motorcycles also come with a relatively low weight of 170kg, making it that much easier to manoeuvre through the city.
In terms of mileage, the Jawa 42 comes with a fuel tank capacity of 14-litres. Considering its rival, we can expect the Jawa Forty Two to also provide an overall mileage of around 35km/l.

Features & Colours
Jawa Motorcycles have gone for a minimalistic approach in terms of both, design and features. This is one reason, the Jawa 42 does not offer a lot of features. This does, however, allow it to come with clean lines and stay true to the original.
Having said this, the motorcycles do offer certain safety features as standard. The Jawa 42 comes with 280mm disc brakes at the front while 153mm drum brakes are used at the rear. The motorcycle does offer single-channel ABS as standard for additional braking assistance.
The motorcycle rides on multispoke rims with tyres sizes of 90/90 R18 and 120/80 R17 at the front and rear, respectively.
Another small, yet retro touch is the instrument cluster with an unusual resting position for the needle. The single-pod cluster does, however, come with a small digital screen to display the time.
The Jawa 42 motorcycle is offered in a range of six different colour options: Nebula Blue, Comet Red, Starlight Blue, Lumos Lime, Halley's Teal and Galactic Green.
Competition
The new Jawa motorcycles will directly rival the likes of the 350cc products from Royal Enfield. Aware of the impending competition from Jawa, Royal Enfield just introduced their 650cc Twins in the Indian market, a day ahead of the Jawa launch.
Booking Details & Delivery
Bookings for the Jawa Motorcycles are no open for an amount of Rs 5,000. Jawa Motorcycles will be setting up 105 exclusive dealerships across the country soon. Deliveries of the Jawa motorcycles is set to begin from sometime in January-2019.
Verdict
Jawa Motorcycle has surely created a buzz around itself, launching their first products after a gap of almost 20 years. The Jawa Motorcycle is expected to receive a good response from the market. We will hopefully get the motorcycles soon to test ride and will share our detailed review on it soon.
