Ducati MotoGP Team Opts For Open Class

By Ajinkya

Ducati will be entering the MotoGP 2014 Championship as an Open Class entrant.

The speculation and rumors had been doing the rounds for a while now. However, Ducati MotoGP team Manager Luigi Dall'Igna announced yesterday that they indeed would be switching to the Open Class for 2014.

Most manufacturers believe that Open Class is ruining MotoGP's basic philosophy of developing new technology using a prototype bike and then forward it to street bikes.

On the other hand many think Open Class is the Future of MotoGP. It feels like the same time when there was a transition from 500cc 2-strokes to today's 4-stroke machines.

DUcati however, how compared both Factory and Open Class technology on their bikes and have realised the need to join Open Class.

The main reason to join as an Open Class entrant is the advantage of developing the bike during the season. A privilege not given to factory teams.

Ducati will now also have the advantage to utilise more fuel for races than factory machinery. They will also have an optional softer tyre to better their chance. Only 5 engines are permitted to factory teams while Open class entrants will be allotted 12 engines for a season.

This seems like an unfair advantage and will have teams and manufacturers thinking if they too should run as an Open Class entrant.

Their riders Cal Crutchlow, Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone will ride under Open Class rules.

Ducati have proved, Dorna's vision of MotoGP future is the right way ahead. Dorna explains the Open Class entry is to increase competition among teams.
