Top Gear’s Clarkson & Hammond Fined, Banned For Overspeeding In France

"Top tip [From Jeremy Clarkson]: If you are going to break the speed limit, make sure you're not in France."

Here's the story behind Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson's above mentioned remark.

Recently, the Top Gear team, along with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond were in France to shoot for the Top Gear annual DVD. On a particularly empty stretch Clarkson, in an Aston Martin Vanquish and Hammond, in a Porsche 911 GT3, were cruising along until they had to stop at a toll booth.

Upon reaching it they realised to their dismay that they had been overspeeding. While the official motorway speed limit in France is 130 km/h, Clarkson was found to be going at 141 km/h and Hammond at 143 km/h. Just a few km/h above the limit right so not a big deal right? Wrong.

It turns out, at the particular stretch the Top Gear duo were overspeeding the limit was just 90km/h.

The French were not sympathetic and the presenters had to pay fine, a considerable amount we presume, and they even had to part with their driving licenses. In Clarkson's own words, "This meant we were left at the side of the motorway with not a penny and no way of driving the Aston and the Porsche"

The guys still had the Top Gear crew to get them and the cars out of there, but unfortunately for the presenters the French highway patrol were not done with them yet. Both drivers were banned from driving in France for three months.
