Ride sharing or car pooling in Europe has reached a whole new level. A company called BlaBlaCar has introduced this facility and has built it to a million dollar business. This company has made long distance travel a pleasure, and not to mention, drastically reduced costs.
Cutting costs for travellers by matching people who are going the same direction, the company has managed to grow steadily and become profitable. This service which was started in 2006, has slowly but steadily grown at a steady pace over the years with 8 million members.
The user has to sign up for this service using his or her real name. This eliminates the risk factor of travelling with a total stranger. BlaBlaCar asks users to rate people based on their experience for future trips so they can keep their experience positive.
The passenger and driver can register online, through their website or using a smartphone app. Once registered, if a driver is headed the same way or to the same location as the passenger, the ride is sorted. They can then get in touch with each other via phone calls or by email.

Once a journey is fixed between a driver and passenger, the entire cost of the trip is shared. BlaBlaCar makes sure that the driver does not see this as his own money making game. The company in return profits by charging the travellers a small amount.
This Paris-based company has already made more than a million trips in Europe. This is the second company in France to have a USD 100 million funding and they are currently looking to expand into Turkey and Brazil.
This service is not only fun for people to get around but also cuts down costs dramatically. It reduces the number of vehicles on the road, keeps the environment healthy and works towards making traffic congestion-free.
