Volkswagen Vento Diesel With Automatic Transmission Coming This Year
Automatic variants of diesel cars tend to be expensive for obvious reasons and as such manufacturers in India shy away from launching this variant, particularly in the mass market segment made up of hatchbacks and entry level sedans.
The only exception until now has been Hyundai which offers the Verna diesel with a 4 speed torque convertor auto gearbox. Neither the most advanced nor the fuel efficient automatic out there, this variant does only reasonably well in the market because it has no competition.

That may soon change if a report by Overdrive magazine is to be believed. The report says that Volkswagen will launch the Vento diesel with the twin-clutch DSG automatic transmission by the middle of this year.
Volkswagen's twin-clutch, DSG automatic transmission is a seven speed unit that's already provided with the Vento TSI and Polo TSI variants. The auto transmission will be mated to the 1.6 liter diesel engine in the Vento TDI.

Unlike the 4 speed basic torque converter automatic transmissions offered by most automakers in India in their entry level cars, VW's 7-speed dual clutch Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) unit offers seamless and far quicker shift between gears with minimal loss of engine torque. This is made possible by the dual clutch, one of which is tasked with keeping the next upper or lower gear ready to be engaged. This translates to sporty performance.
