Mercedes S-Class S500 Petrol Assembly To Start In India Before Diesel
Having sold the entire first batch of S-Class S500 petrol sedans that were imported into India as completely built units Mercedes-Benz will soon begin local assembly of the S500 variant. It was previously thought that the second batch of S-Class sedans sold in India would be the locally built S350 diesel variant.
Speaking to the media yesterday during the launch of C-Class Grand Edition at the Chakan facility Eberhard Kern, MD & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India said that demand for the V8 powered S500 variant of the S-Class was more than the S350 diesel and hence production of the petrol trim will take precedence. This will also be the first V8 engined Merc to be locally assembled in India.

The S500 built in India will be different in terms of specs compared to the S500 sold in Europe. For instance, the car will not feature the Mercedes distronic adaptive suspension system. This is because Indian civilians are not allowed to possess radar without permission from the government, something the system makes use of.
The first locally assembled S-Class S500 will roll out of the Chakan plant in April. The S500 is powered by a 4.7 liter twin turbo V8 engine rated at 453 HP and 700 Nm of torque. The car can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and as an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The transmission is a 7 speed dual clutch unit.
The S350 diesel variant, which will be priced significantly lower, comes with a 3.0 liter V6 engine and delivers 254 HP and 620 Nm of torque.
Mr Kern also revealed that Mercedes-Benz will launch 10 new models this year, two of which will debut at the Auto Expo 2014. Also showcased at the auto expo will be CLA45 AMG & ML500 High protection cars and the GLA Concept.
