Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Edges Closer To Completion, Details Emerge

By Ganesh

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT. This is the car that will take the place of the SLS AMG after production of the last batch of the "Final Edition" will end in May. The car has been seen many times in the past few months at the Nurburgring, being tested and is now said to be in very close to completion.

The upcoming AMG GT, also known by its codename ‘C190' will come fitted with an all new AMG developed twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, coupled to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.

AutocarUK, which has spoken to sources inside Mercedes-Benz, says that the engine will develop 520 bhp in its original form. However, the team also plans on introducing a hardcore (Black series) and a toned down version of the car. These will produce 580 bhp and 480 bhp, and are expected to arrive in 2016 and 2018 respectively.

This rear wheel drive, aluminium-bodied, strictly two-seater sports car is being developed specifically to compete in a segment that's also includes the Aston Martin V8 Vantage and the Porsche 911 Carrera S. Cars that fall short of the purported 520 bhp power figure of the upcoming AMG GT.

In terms of design, the AMG GT will measure about the same size as the SLS AMG, though Mercedes-Benz's head of design, Gorden Wagener says the new car is sharper, more contemporary looking than the one it is replacing. "It makes the SLS look dated," the report quotes him a saying.

Despite design similarities, the most prominent being the elongated nose, the AMG GT will differ from the SLS AMG in one major design element. That of the doors. The new car will forgo the latter's gullwing doors and opt for conventional door design for a lowered center of gravity.

It should be remembered, however, that the AMG GT is not a successor, but rather a replacement to the SLS AMG. This means a brand new SLS AMG will be brought back, reportedly in 2020, when the AMG GT will be decommissioned.

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT will make its public debut at the Paris Auto Show this year following which it will be launched around April 2015.
