Maruti Celerio Diesel Engine Confirmed For Launch This Fiscal
It has been known for quite some time now that Suzuki is developing its first-ever diesel engine, with a capacity of 800cc. Early reports have said that Maruti Suzuki will try out the new small-capacity diesel engine first in a commercial vehicle, followed by a passenger car.
A fresh report confirms the same. According to a Maruti Suzuki official who spoke to FT, the first product to get the 0.8-litre diesel engine will be the Maruti LCV, known by its codename Y9T, that will be launched in January 2015.
More significantly, the same official has also revealed that close on the heels of the LCV will be Celerio, launching with the same diesel engine.

The company's plans for Suzuki's first self-developed 800cc diesel engine will not end there. Come 2016, Maruti Suzuki will introduce the engine in the Eeco passenger carrier.
At present, the Eeco is sold in petrol and CNG variants only. Since CNG is only available in 15 states in the country, the Eeco is at a disadvantage against the diesel-engined Tata Ace Magic and Mahindra Maxximo passenger carries, its chief competitors.
The diesel-powered Eeco will not only be able to better compete with its rivals, but it will also allow Maruti Suzuki to make its way into several new areas such as call centre cab operations in cities, where it is absent at present.
With a planned launch in 2016, Maruti Suzuki Eeco will eventually take the place of the Omni mini van.
