Mahindra Racing Aims For Top Three Finish In Formula E Championship

By Ganesh

Mahindra Racing, the only Indian team that will be participating in the maiden Formula E electric car championship, is confident of securing a podium finish in the inaugural season.

Mahindra Racing chairman S P Shukla feels that the company's expertise in electric car technology should give it an edge over teams that are plain racing outfits.

FIA Formula E Championship begins in September this year. Racing for Mahindra will be former HRT F1 teammates Karun Chandhok from India and Brazilian Bruno Senna.

"We have to think of a top-three finish. Being an electric car manufacturer, we are well placed for a top three finish. Hearing the country's national anthem on the podium has to be our goal," TOI quotes Shukla as having said.

It should be noted that this season all cars will be identical, essentially making this a one car series. Teams will only get the chance to make modifications to their cars from next season. Hence, a large part of winning or losing will depend purely on drivers' talent.

"All team start from scratch but it is a big advantage for us that we are familiar with the electric technology. Battery life is limited in these cars so it is all about optimising the performance. Though we are to get the cars only in June, our simulation work has given us a fair idea of where we stand," Shukla said.

This is Mahindra Racing's first foray into four wheeler racing, which already has a strong presence in motorcycle racing championship.

Formula E Championship will see ten teams (each with two cars) race electric open-wheeled cars in street circuits in various cities across the world. The inaugural race is scheduled to be held September 13th in Beijing.
