Auto Industry Sales Numbers For December 2021 Revealed: 16.05 Percent Drop In Overall Sales
Vehicle sales in India fell by 16.05 percent in December 2021 when compared to December 2019. Sales reports released by FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Association) revealed that overall sales of vehicles in the country are yet to recover. December 2021 which was expected to be a good month for the industry, wasn't actually as good as was touted to be.
The automobile industry is one of the largest contributors to the economy of the sub-continent. Quite naturally then, it was also one of the most affected sectors in the COVID-19 induced lockdowns and curfews.
Over the last few months in 2021, the industry has been on a steady road to recovery and it was expected that by December 2021, things would normalise. However, that doesn't seem to be the case according to the latest numbers.
FADA released data that compared the sales in December 2021 to that of December 2019 and not 2020 as December 2019 was a regular pre-COVID month. On the bright side, sales of three-wheelers increased by 59 percent, while commercial vehicle sales increased by 14 percent.
On the other hand, two-wheeler sales dipped by 20 percent. India is the largest two-wheeler market in the world and this drop in sales numbers is rather worrying. Across different segments, though buyers express their interest in purchasing two-wheelers, the purchase doesn't go through. Buyers are wary of the rising number of COVID cases and the new variants of the virus.
With a drop of 11 percent, the passenger vehicle segment too didn't fare very well in terms of sales. Though there is enough buyer sentiment to buy four-wheelers, the chip shortage as it turns out, is still affecting sales. However, the report goes on to mention that the dealers are relieved to see an increased flow of vehicles.
Thoughts On Vehicle Sales In India Dropping By 16.05 Percent
It does seem like the automotive industry is still facing quite a few challenges then. Dealers are also wary of the rising number of cases with the new variants incoming. There are curfews and lockdowns being imposed and this could have a negative impact on sales in the coming days. Just how big an impact it will have, is something that will be revealed at the end of the month.
