Maruti Suzuki August Sales Down By Half

Maruti Suzuki's August sales was expected to go down but the severity of the slump should be shocking. While the huge drop in sales of the Swift and Swift DZire was expected as these two cars were not easily available in showrooms, the 41% drop in sales of small cars such as the Alto, Wagon R, A-Star and Maruti 800 was not expected.
With petrol cars sales continuing to slow down, Maruti Suzuki's sales in August in this segment has seen a steep fall. Small car sales fell by 40.2%. Sales of compact cars including the Swift, Ritz and Estilo fell by 62.2% to 6,059 units. Sales of the Super compact Swift DZire fell by 60.7% to 3085 units.
The sales of Maruti Suzuki's mid size sedan SX4 continues with its down ward trend with a sales drop of 76.4%. Maruti Suzuki has reported zero sales of the imported Kizashi executive sedan.
The only silver lining in Maruti Suzuki's August sales is the sales of the recently launched Ertiga. The utility vehicle segment which consists of the Ertiga, Gypsy and Grand Vitara has posted 6,883 sales from 1,290 units sales reported in August sales. Maruti Suzuki's Vans which include the Omni, Eeco and Versa have seen a marginal drop of 7%.
Maruti Suzuki's August sales performance is only an indication of the prevailing conditions. The Manesar lockout meant Maruti's best selling cars - the Swift and Swift DZire were not available in showrooms. With operations at the plant slowly picking up speed, the carmaker can hope to have a better sales period in September.
