India is by far the world's largest market for small cars. There are various reasons for Indians preferring small cars. Just 12 people among 1,000 Indians own a car. Hence several car buyers are first time buyers who prefer to start with a small car. Another reason for small cars ruling the Indian car market is that their fuel economy is better than larger cars and they can easily navigate through city traffic.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto, Wagon R, Hyundai Santro, i10, Ford Figo,Tata Nano, Chevrolet Beat, Toyota Etios Liva are currently some of the successful small cars in India. Carmakers are constantly developing new models and small cars are take up a large chunk among new models. With some of the current small cars having spent long years in the market, carmakers are developing replacements or new models. Carmakers who were not into the small car sector are also entering this space. The Etios Liva can be considered as an example.
