Will The Hyundai Eon Topple Maruti Suzuki?

Hyundai was struggling to make a mark in the rural car market where Maruti Suzuki has a firm hold and the Eon is its response. The Hyundai Eon is a small car that has been specifically developed to cater to the price conscious Indian car market. Expected to be priced just over Rs.2 lakhs, the Eon will pose a credible challenge to Maruti Suzuki's Alto.
The Eon is powered by a 800cc engine. Invariably this will remind us the Maruti 800, a car that made Maruti Suzuki India's leading carmaker. Incidentally the Eon was developed under the project name H800. There were several speculations that Hyundai was trying to build a successor to the Maruti 800 and available information confirms it could a possibility.
The Eon has created a huge buzz in the internet as well. Media reviews of the Eon indicate the new Hyundai small car will offer ample space for four with a easy revving engine. The fuel economy of the Eon is slated at 21kmpl which is incredible for a petrol car.
Bookings of the Eon have already started much before its launch on 13th October. People are ready to pay booking price of Rs.25,000 at some showrooms even before seeing the car. If these trends are converted to consistent sales, there is no doubt about the Eon becoming one of the top selling small cars in India.
With Maruti Suzuki still suffering from labour issues, production has become an issue and buyers are rather worried about long waiting periods. At this juncture it is quite natural to think about the next best thing and now it happens to be the Eon. If the car delivers on its promise, Hyundai might be well on its way to topple Maruti Suzuki (fingers crossed).
