Owning a sedan is always considered as a way of showing to the world that you have arrived. A sedan indicates not only the owner's financial status but also his taste. There are several sedans now in the Indian car market that have been the aspirational car modes for us Indians. Our initial choice for a sedan was limited to Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz sedans which were out of reach of many people.

On the other end of the spectrum we had to choose between the HM Ambassador, the Fiat Padmini and the HM Contessa in the eighties. The nineties saw the arrival of Maruti Suzuki's sedans - the Esteem and the Baleno, the Mitsubishi Lancer and the Honda City. The beginning of the 21st century opened the floodgates for more mid-level sedans.

The sedan market in India has shown tremendous signs of growth in the past decade. Ford entered the scene with its Fiesta, Skoda had its Octavia, Honda updated its City with a more stylish design and Hyundai launched its Accent and Verna. Maruti Suzuki also entered the mid-level sedan market with its SX4.

The sedan market is now awash with more choices after the entry of more foreign carmakers. Volkswagen's Vento was June's best selling sedan in India. Hyundai has launched the new Fluidic Verna that has taken the market by storm. The Honda City has regained its Numero Uno position in the sector after the carmaker reduced its price.
