It is a known fact that the Indian car market is dominated by hatchbacks. They constitute the bulk of car sales due to their low starting price, fuel economy and easy manoeuvrability in city roads. But the economic growth in the past decade has meant several Indian car buyers now prefer to grow out of their hatchbacks in to bigger yet fuel economical cars. The type of car that has emerged as the hot seller is the compact sedan.

Compact sedans are essentially of the same length of a hatchback but with a boot in the rear rather than a hatch. Maruti Suzuki built India's first compact sedan the esteem, which was the stretched out version of the Maruti 1000.The Esteem received rave reviews for its rev happy engine and performance.

The top selling compact sedans currently sold in India are the Swift DZire, Volkswagen Vento, Hyundai Accent, Tata Indigo, Toyota Etios and Mahindra Verito.
