Maruti Suzuki Manesar Strike Triggers 13% Drop

Maruti Suzuki, the highest selling Indian carmaker has reported its sales figures for August 2011. The company sold 91,442 units including 14,356 exports. The carmaker's sales are 13 per cent lower than the sales reported in August 2010. the carmaker has blamed the strike going on at its plant in Manesar for the reduced sales.

Maruti Suzuki builds the A-Star, Swift and SX4 in Manesar. Production at Manesar has been severely affected after the company found several quality issues in production. Production is going on at a snails pace currently after the carmaker employed more than 200 new employees after very few workers signed its good conduct bond.

Here is model wise break up of sales. Car under the mini category, the Maruti 800, Alto, A-Star and Wagon R posted a sales decline of 18.3 per cent at 37,496 units. Compact hatchbacks such as the Swift, Zen Estillo and the Ritz posted a more severe sales decline of 26.9 per cent at 16,043 units. This comes as a surprise considering the new Swift had received more bookings before its launch than any other car in India.

Among Maruti Suzuki's sedans, Sales of the Swift DZire fell 6.8 per cent to 7,856 units. The SX4 executive sedan saw its sales decline by 7.6 per cent to 2,048 units. The carmaker sold 8 units of the imported Kizashi premium sedan.

The only segment to have posted a positive sales performance was the SUV segment. Sales of the Gypsy and the Grand Vitara rose a whopping 677.1 per cent. Maruti Suzuki's Vans, continued their sales slide at 12,500 units marking a 11.7 per cent decline.
