Maruti Suzuki Sales Down 21 Per Cent

The strike at Manesar is being accused of being the primary reason for the sales decline. The strike went on the for the whole duration of September and production of the best selling Swift suffered severely during this period.
In its statement, Maruti Suzuki India said: “The disruption in production owing to the labour issue at the company's Manesar plant during September adversely impacted the sales numbers during the month."
Domestic sales of Maruti Suzuki India fell 17.2 per cent after sales of 78,816 units from September 2010's domestic sales of 95,148. Exports from the Indian carmaker fell by a massive 47.5 per cent to 6,749 units from 12,858 units it sold last year. The drop in exports is due to the stoppage of production of the A-Star hatchback at Manesar.
In a break up of car sales in terms of segments, small hatchbacks such as Maruti 800, A-Star and Wagon R fell by 23.5 per cent. In the compact car segment, sales of the Zen Estilo, Swift and Ritz fell by 9.3 per cent. The only segment in Maruti Suzuki's line-up to witness a growth in September is the compact sedan segment which has the Swift DZire. The DZire saw its sales increase by 9.9 per cent to 9,411 units. Sales of the SX4 sedan however fell by a massive 90 per cent to just 190 units from 1,965 units in September 2010.
Sales of the Kizashi, the only imported model from Maruti Suzuki was reported to be 14 units. Maruti Suzuki is hoping with the end of the strike on 1st October, consumer sentiment will improve and increase sales during the October festival season.
