Kawasaki Supercharged Four Cylinder Engine Debuts In Tokyo

By Ganesh

At the Tokyo Motor Show the star of the party from Kawasaki's booth is not a concept motorcycle, but an engine.

Kawasaki has revealed what could go on to become the first ever production supercharged four cylinder motorcycle engine from a major manufacturer.

Kawasaki is certainly not new to building supercharged engines as it already sells jet skis - the Ultra 300 lineup - powered by supercharged 300 HP engines. But still, a forced induction motorcycle engine in a production superbike is an exciting prospect.

MCN believes the supercharged engine could be close to a 1000cc unit and could power the next generation Kawasaki ZX-14R super sports tourer. Kawasaki has not released any technical niformation about the engine just yet, only saying we'll see the engine in action in the near future.

Following is the official statement from Kawasaki:
"Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. also has a long history of developing technologies for turbine engines," states the company. "The lifeblood of these turbines is their blades, which need to be able to cope with extreme heat and vibration while spinning at high speeds. Know-how from years of designing turbine engine blades was instilled in the first supercharger developed by a motorcycle manufacturer. And of course, designing a motorcycle-use supercharged engine in-house means that maximum efficiency could be pursued."
