BMW Concept5 X5 eDrive Plug-In Hybrid Heads To Frankfurt
The flow of new hybrid vehicles seems to be constant. Just days before Land Rover announced its production version of Range Rover hybrid SUV. Hot on its heels is BMW with its own hybrid SUV which is based on the latest X5 SUV.
A difference is that BMW Concept5 X5 eDrive is still a concept. Also, the concept, unlike the Range Rover Hybrid, is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). BMW will reveal its hybrid concept SUV at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

BMW has not mentioned the details about the engine it has used. All we know is that is a twin turbocharged 4 cylinder engine and it works in tandem with a 70 kW (about 94 HP) electric motor.

The motor will draw its power from a high-voltage lithium-ion battery located under the boot, in a crash safe zone.

BMW X5 eDrive is the first hybrid to made use of the company's xDrive all-wheel drive system, which will kick in when both electric and engine power are available.

The hybrid will offer three driving modes: "the intelligent hybrid drive option for an optimum balance between sportiness and efficiency; pure electric and therefore emission-free driving; or Safe Battery mode to maintain the current battery charge."

Being a plug-in hybrid, the X5 eDrive has a pure driving electric mode with a greater range than the Range Rover Hybrid. The BMW will supposedly go 30 km, while the Land Rover can only do about a mile on battery power.

At it max potential, the X5 hybrid will reach 0-100 km/h in 7.0 seconds. Top speed in pure electric mode is 120 km/h.

BMW claims the Concept5 X5 eDrive deliver an average fuel economy of 3.8l/100km (26.31 km/l) on the EU cycle with CO2 emissions of less than 90g/km.

Few of the design highlights seen in the images are the Silverflake metallic exterior paintwork, blue accented kidney grille slats, air intake bars and the inlay in the rear bumper.

The concept also features specially designed styling features such as the roof rails, a charging cable connector that lights up while charging and 21-inch light-alloy wheels.
