Bajaj's KTM Plans To Buy BMW's Husqvarna
Husqvarna, the Swedish motorcycle brand famous for its off-road and super motor bikes will soon get an Indian touch. Reports say the BMW Motorrad owned motorcycle brand is for sale and KTM, which is part owned by Bajaj Auto is in advanced talks to buy Husqvarna.
It is rather surprising to see Husqvarna being up for sale within few years of BMW Motorrad taking over the Swedish brand. BMW had bought Husqvarna from MV Augusta in 2008 and has invested heavily for new product development.
The European media is abuzz with speculations about KTM taking over Husqvarna. However there has been no official statement from either KTM, Bajaj Auto or BMW Motorrad. According to the reports, the official announcement of KTM buying Husqvarna could be made in the next week.
Reports say BMW had spent a lot of time and energy on revamping Husqvarna's product architecture. It has also spent several man hours on research and development. It is yet to be ascertained why BMW is planning to part ways with Husqvarna.
The KTM-Husqvarna deal could also have a positive impact on Bajaj Auto. Bajaj has already gained through its part ownership of KTM. It is not only building KTM motorcycle in India but is also exporting them to other countries. Bajaj has also gained significantly in terms of technology which is most evidently seen in the recently launched Pulsar 200NS.
The KTM-Husqvarna deal might not bring about an immediate change in Bajaj 's products. But do not be surprised to see some Husqvarna DNA in Bajaj Motorcycles if the deal is closed. We could also see Husqvarna bikes on sale in India in KTM showrooms too.
