Yamaha YZF-R2 Could Debut Next Month In India With Bigger 200cc Engine
Yamaha Motor is expected to launch a new motorcycle in India, featuring a 200cc engine. According to several reports, the upcoming model is likely to be the YZF-R2, which was trademarked in India last year and could make its debut next month.
The Yamaha R15 is one of the most celebrated entry-level sports bikes in India. After enjoying enormous success for over a decade, Yamaha now appears to be preparing a new motorcycle for India, built on the same platform as the R15.

Named 'YZF-R2', Yamaha trademarked the name in India last year. This motorcycle is likely to feature a 200cc engine built on the same architecture as the R15's 155cc liquid-cooled engine. That said, long-time R15 fans have no reason to panic, as the new motorcycle is expected to sit above the Yamaha R15 in Yamaha's lineup, with the R15 continuing as the brand's entry-level R-series offering.
The new 200cc machine could produce up to 25 PS and 19 Nm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox and VVA technology. The R2 could also get the same USD fork and monoshock suspension setup, built on the same deltabox frame and aluminium swingarm, along with disc brakes and dual-channel ABS.

If carried forward, this combination could offer precise handling characteristics along with strong acceleration, especially for city rides and quick overtakes. Yamaha is also expected to carry forward the features and technology offered on the R15, which include a quick shifter, assist and slipper clutch, traction control, Class-D bi-functional LED headlight, side-stand engine cut-off, and Y-Connect.
The Yamaha R15 continues to lead the entry-level sports bike segment with strong sales numbers, alongside the Yamaha MT-15, which is its naked streetfighter counterpart. With the arrival of a more powerful 200cc motorcycle, Yamaha's lineup is expected to expand into the 200cc segment, where the R2 could directly rival the Bajaj Pulsar RS200, Hero Karizma XMR, and KTM RC 200.
